The only fly in that ointment is the still limited bandwidth of the mobile internet. Until broadband speeds are available on mobile the way it is on the fixed line internet for a reasonably fixed flat rate price (like most ISPs), then specialized apps that delivered a target experience will still be preferrable.

If we do ever get to that point, then your final prediction "over the long term apps will probably start to die away in favour of using the internet the way it was intended."
