I like books, but once you have read them, the only reason to keep them is either because you will read them again, or because you derive some other non-reading benefit from them.
One of the main reasons is because books make you feel clever - a physical representation of what you know. Now the problem with that is no-one to my recollection has ever spent much time looking at my bookshelf.
I am fairly sure there are around 20 people who read this blog, and most of them are important to me in one way or another - so what better way to make them think I am smart than to show them my old books?

Do you want one? All you have to do is make me an offer of a book that you've got that you no longer want, but you think that I may find interesting. We can then swap books.
If the fancy takes you I have also set up a group on Flickr called 'The Book Exchange' where you can also tag up your books for exchanging
